This aerial view of the Imperial Valley in southern California was taken by the crew of Apollo 9.
The Salton Sea is visible at top center. Below it are the farms of the Imperial (Coachella) Valley (the many small squares seen in false color).
Were it not for the irrigation water brought by canal from the Colorado River, the entire area would be a desert.
